"Why would you count on me? Because I built you a bike? Because my brother knows the words to your theme song? We don't know each other!"
—Evelyn in response to Elastigirl feeling betrayed by her being the Screenslaver.

Evelyn Deavor is the main antagonist of Incredibles 2. She is the brilliant brainchild behind her brother Winston’s telecommunications company, knows her way around tech. She loves tinkering with tech and has never met a problem she can’t solve. She is revealed to be the true Screenslaver and evil mastermind behind the Screenslaver character (who is her henchman and puppet) near the climax of the film.

Personality[]

Evelyn appears to be loyal, kind-hearted, caring, and eager to help others. She is also a brilliant and intelligent character. She is, however, often laid-back, as she seems unworried of anything. She encourages her brother to keep on making heroes protect the world at whatever cost. However, despite being helpful, she also seems to be really strict and always takes things really seriously.

It would later turn out to be all a fabrication of her true nature: a vengeful, cunning, hateful, bitter, mean-spirited, cold-hearted and ruthless person who would do anything to rid the world of all things super (and to avenge the deaths of her parents) as she sees them as making people weak and unable to save themselves from other threats. She is also shown to be cruel and sadistic, as shown when she showed little concern and maybe even amusement when Elastigirl collapsed from hypoxia, as well as pettiness as she remorselessly framed an innocent pizza delivery guy to be her decoy because he was surly and for presumably delivering cold pizza.

Despite her villainous nature, Evelyn does have redeeming qualities, such as her caring about her father and brother, but crosses the line into becoming a villain by using extreme methods to turn the public against Supers.

Physical appearance[]

Evelyn appears to be in her 40s and has a somewhat slender figure. Her height is 5’9” (175 cm) and weighs 135 lbs (61 kg). Her hair is brown and short and resembles Elastigirl's, except unlike Elastigirl, she does not keep it neat and tidy. Her eyes are blue and she is usually seen in casual clothing, usually consisting of grey, white and black outfits. The patterns on her clothes are linked with hypnosis, leaving a clue to her true nature. She also wears snake skin boots (mostly brown). When she escapes by jet, to avoid hypoxia, she dons an oxygen mask that bears a resemblance to the mouthpiece on the Screenslaver's hood.

Background[]

Evelyn and her brother Winston were the children of Mr. Deavor, the CEO of the telecommunications company DevTech, and an avid fan and supporter of Supers. One night, burglars broke into the Deavor home. Instead of hiding in the safe room with his wife, Mr. Deavor attempted to call Gazerbeam and Fironic for help. Unfortunately, this was after the Super Relocation Act was passed, and therefore, there was no response, resulting in the burglars shooting and killing him. Not long afterwards, Evelyn and Winston's mother would die of heartbreak.

With both of their parents deceased, Winston and Evelyn inherited DevTech, both using their unique skills to build the company into the biggest electronics and media firm in the world — the tech-savvy Evelyn invented and created innovative products, while Winston would use his natural charisma and people skills to sell them to the masses. Winston also inherited his father's firm love of superheroes as well, believing his father could have been saved had they not been abolished and dreamed of one day of abolishing the Super Relocation Act. Evelyn, on the other hand, saw her father's murder from a different perspective. Instead of believing her parents could have been saved had supers been around, she saw that her father only died because of him depending on them to save the day, instead of taking the initiative to save himself by hiding in the safe room. Perceiving supers to be a danger to society by prompting people to be lazy and expect others to solve their problems, she developed a secret hatred of them, which went unknown to her hero-loving brother.

Biography[]

Incredibles 2[]

Three months after the defeat of Syndrome, Winston sees his chance to bring back supers while observing Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, and Frozone's attempt to stop The Underminer. Evelyn is drawn into his plan, and arrives to join her brother and greet the three heroes when they are summoned to DevTech. When Winston explains the story and death of his father, still blaming the Relocation Act, Evelyn notably suggests that their father could have saved himself by hiding away in the safe room, but Winston strongly disagrees. Winston then reveals his plan to use Elastigirl as an advocate for superheroes, determining through Evelyn's cost analysis that she causes less damage than the other two. With encouragement from her husband, Elastigirl accepts the offer, and is sent to fight crime in New Urbem with a new suit and bike called the Elasticycle (the latter provided by Evelyn). Mr. Incredible is left to watch over Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack in their new home, provided by Winston.

The Screenslaver hacked an maglev train that was on its first journey in New Urbem, forcing it to go in reverse and towards the end of the built track. Elastigirl successfully saves the train from going off the end of the track, and upon confronting the driver of the monorail, Elastigirl finds that he has no memory of what happened. On the monitor in the drivers' compartment, she finds a message from the Screenslaver, greeting her.

Because of her successful rescue attempt of the train, the public begins to respect Elastigirl, who is invited to a televised interview. However, Screenslaver hijacks the interview by brainwashing everyone near a screen, revealing his intentions to assassinate the ambassador Elastigirl had met with earlier. Fortunately, Elastigirl succeeds in rescuing the ambassador from demise, foiling Screenslaver's plan. The next day, after being introduced to a group of new superheroes inspired by her actions (Voyd, He-Lectrix, Reflux, Screech, Krushauer, and Brick), Elastigirl and Evelyn begin to bond, where they both realize how to find Screenslaver: that being to trace his signal while he is broadcasting.

Determined to catch Screenslaver, Elastigirl sets up another interview in which she does not physically appear, and, as predicted, Screenslaver broadcasts again and takes control of all who are viewing. While Screenslaver rants about humanity's increasing tendency to replace real-life experiences with simulations, Elastigirl tracks Screenslaver down to an apartment complex, where she discovers a large amount of research and devices related to hypnotism. Screenslaver then traps the two of them in a box with hypnotic lights and attacks Elastigirl using a electroshocking weapon that neutralizes her elasticity. However, Screenslaver finds himself still overpowered by Elastigirl and sets a bomb to destroy his apartment while he escapes. After chasing Screenslaver down, Elastigirl unmasks him to find a young man who does not remember what had happened to him. Ignoring the man's claims of being just a normal pizza delivery guy who had absolutely no recollection of anything that happened, Elastigirl has him arrested for his crimes.

Later, at a celebration party for “catching Screenslaver”, Elastigirl retires to a room in the back of the DevTech building with Evelyn. Elastigirl is holding the Screenslaver's mask, which was presented to her as a prize for capturing Screenslaver. Elastigirl realizes that the hypno-screens the Screenslaver has made are also within his hypno-goggles. She puts the pieces of the scheme together, and Evelyn forces the goggles on her to prevent her from taking action.

Elastigirl wakes up tied to a chair in a sub-zero temperature room. Evelyn appears behind a glass window and reveals herself to be the mastermind behind the Screenslaver, stating that she despises superheroes, believing they keep civilians weak just like what had led to her father's murder. She also sees her brother's mission as a threat to humankind's independence. Evelyn then tricks Bob into 'rescuing' Helen before the hypnotized heroine forces another pair of hypno-goggles onto Bob, putting him under Evelyn's control as well. She also gives goggles to the wannabe supers as well, commanding them to capture and place hypno-goggles on Frozone and the Parr children. Lucius ends up captured and put under Evelyn's control by the wannabe heroes, but the kids escape in the Incredibile. Using the main three supers, she begins her plan to turn the world against supers in a super legalization ceremony on the Everjust.

Dash, Violet, and Jack-Jack sneak aboard the Everjust to rescue their parents, while Evelyn proceeds with the next stage of her plan. She intends to hypnotize the assembled leaders, supers and Winston, and also force the mind controlled Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and Frozone to discredit themselves by announcing to the public that they will no longer save people. The three supers proceed to attack the crew and redirect the superyacht, threatening to crash the ship into New Urbem.

After the hypnotized supers took over the boat under Evelyn's control, the kids find them. Jack-Jack floats over to Elastigirl and removes the goggles from her using telekinesis, and Elastigirl, now having regained consciousness, takes the goggles off her husband and Frozone. They then proceed to remove the goggles from all six wannabe supers and redirect the superyacht to prevent it from crashing into New Urbem, foiling Evelyn’s plan. She tries to make an escape with Winston in a plane, who refuses to go with her and proceeds to free the hypnotized ambassadors and supers. She then attempts to fly away in the plane, only to be found by Elastigirl (after a bout with hypoxia), who uses a flare gun to shoot Evelyn's oxygen tank, sending her flying out of the plane. She was then saved by Elastigirl and Voyd, with Elastigirl falling after her through one of Voyd's portals, catching her and bringing her down slowly to the deck of the Everjust.

Evelyn is later arrested for her crimes, and as she is hauled off to the police car, she ungratefully tells Helen that even though she saved her, it does not put her in the right. Helen simply replies that she is just glad that Evelyn is still alive. Evelyn is then driven off to jail, though Violet fears that due to her wealth, she might be back out of custody in no time rather than face a lengthy prison sentence. Whether or not this turns out to be true remains unknown.

Powers & Abilities[]

Evelyn possesses no superpowers, and is thus not a Super. She is, however, a tech genius that knows her way around it, since she was a child, and has never met a problem she cannot solve. That skill allowed her to uncover a way to hypnotize people with hypnotic lights and a screen, along with building hypnotize goggles with mini screen lenses.

She is also a master manipulator and possesses skills in acting, as she is able to make her own brother believe that she also believes in his and their parents' support in Supers, hide her hatred of them, and to keep suspicion away from her as shown when her mind-controlled puppet, The Screenslaver, sends out her messages, terrorizes people, and fights Elastigirl, all without showing any signs of satisfaction of her plan falling into place.

Trivia[]

  • Evelyn was based on a cat. This is hinted at in the movie when Winston is singing the Frozone theme song. He says, "Who's the cat who's always chill" just as Evelyn enters the room, probably back from New Urbem.
  • Screenslaver/Evelyn Deavor's gimmick of using hypnotic goggles to control people was previously employed in The Incredibles comic book series by the villain Mezmerella.
  • She is the character who wears the most items of clothing in the second film. In total, she wears 8 different pieces of clothing. They describe her personality, from white to black. Near the end of the movie, her clothes tend towards black. The patterns of her clothing are linked with hypnosis. The oxygen mask that she wears on the jet at the end of the film also resembles the Screenslaver's hood.
  • Evelyn was supposed to have another brother named Nelson Deavor. He was supposed to be the main villain of the movie, together with Winston. However, the producers changed the idea and Nelson became He-Lectrix. There was also a super named Shelectric who Evelyn was based on.
  • Evelyn's character model was not created until another super, named Shellac, was cut from the film, which is presumed that she would have used some kind of resin coating to encase criminals.
  • The Screenslaver's lair in New Urbem is actually Evelyn's secret den where she had worked on all her plans. This creates the illusion of her puppet being the "true" villain and lowers the risk of her being discovered as the puppeteer. That is why she gave orders to the Screenslaver to destroy all her evidence.
  • She is a qualified jet pilot.
  • Her name is a pun on the phrase "Evil Endeavor".
  • She is the first female Pixar villain.
  • During her college years, Evelyn curated a series of underground art shows in the Bohemian district of New Urbem.
  • She shares her villain name with Screenslaver.
  • She and Screenslaver are two separate people, meaning that Evelyn controls Screenslaver into doing her bidding, making him look bad.
  • She is only referred once by Elastigirl as 'Screenslaver' because the term is mostly referred to Screenslaver, her puppet.
  • Evelyn has some similarities with the first film's main antagonist, Syndrome. They initially like supers but eventually hate them due to a traumatic experience; Evelyn's father was killed by burglars when the supers failed to arrive due to the new law and Syndrome is turned down by Mr. Incredible. They possess no superpowers, therefore making them ordinary humans; however, their great intelligence compensates for their lack of powers. Their goals involve getting revenge against Supers; Evelyn wants to ban supers forever and Syndrome wants to kill all supers. Ironically, their defeat is the same as their goal since Evelyn is most likely imprisoned for life and Syndrome is killed at the end.
    • Evelyn does have some redeeming qualities since she cares for her family unlike Syndrome who enjoys killing others, including children.
