The Omnidroid v.8 (a.k.a. the Omnidroid v.X8, or the Omnidroid 8000) was the eighth prototype of the Omnidroids created by Syndrome as part of Operation Kronos in the film, The Incredibles. It is also the first Omnidroid to be fought onscreen in the film. Like its predecessors, it was designed solely to kill any Supers it comes across. Its predecessors' experiences against them have been integrated into its programming to improve its eventual encounter with Mr. Incredible. While powerful, its demise lent improvements to its successor models, making them far deadlier in combat with the Incredibles.

Features[]

According to the technical specifications shown to Mr. Incredible by Mirage, the Omnidroid 08 has five bi-symmetrical, segmented legs with four-fingered grappling claws (which can be spun like buzzsaws) for penti-lateral locomotion, bi-polar sensor clusters and Revision 4.0 of the artificial intelligence programming. Its thick, near-impenetrable armor can also withstand the harsh, unforgiving temperatures of molten lava. Plus, it can collapse itself into a sphere and roll itself around for faster movement. Mirage had referred to this Omnidroid version as the "9000" even though "08" was visible on the robot's shell. This is the only Omnidroid to be shown to have had bright blue visors.

In the video game based on the film, the Omnidroid 08 is also depicted to fire lasers from its optic sensors, with a laser that leaves a fiery trail from the upper sensor, and a rapid-fire burst from the lower sensor. It could also collapse its sensor clusters and spin itself like a buzzsaw on its axis to try and cut the target with its claws.

Biography[]

The Incredibles[]

The Omnidroid v.8 fights Mr. Incredible when he first sets foot on Nomanisan Island, sent there under the impression that he needs to deactivate the robot now that it is rampant. Eventually when Mr. Incredible reaches an ominous neck of the jungle where Mirage said the Omnidroid was supposedly lurking about, he encounters large slash marks on a tree and a giant X-shaped footprint on the ground. Just when his suspicions arise, the robot suddenly appears, advancing upon him. The Omnidroid immediately slashes at Mr. Incredible with its claw, successfully making contact with his shoulder and cutting his suit. Mr. Incredible throws a punch that sends the robot flying into a tree, but the Omnidroid uprights itself quickly as if it never happened. After dodging another attack, the Omnidroid collapses into a sphere, transforms into a bowling ball, and races towards Mr. Incredible, who runs away with the robot in hot pursuit. Both dive into an outcrop and then into a volcano, landing heavily on its pinnacle. The Omnidroid attempts to force Mr. Incredible into the lava as he tries to push back, but then Mr. Incredible jerks to one side so that the robot falls victim to its own force and plunges into the lava and sinks. Mr. Incredible sees this and makes fun of the robot.

However, the robot bursts out of the lava from right beneath (as it is invincible to lava) unscathed and its armor glowing. It advances onto Mr. Incredible, who tries to escape by jumping onto a chunk of rock that had broken free. But the Omnidroid then grabs him by his feet with one of its claws and his arms with another. It attempts to pull him apart, but it unintentionally fixes Mr. Incredible's bad back, which allows him to break free and rip off the claw that is holding his arms. Mr. Incredible then proceeds to fool the Omnidroid momentarily by hiding directly below its lower sensor before ripping it off, which he throws into the lava. He climbs through the hole that once held the sensor and into the innards of the robot. The Omnidroid punches holes into its own armor in a vain attempt to get Mr. Incredible out of it, causing severe damage to itself in the process. Untouched by the attacks, Mr. Incredible tosses away the upper sensor and whistles for the robot to try to grab him. It uses another claw, but Mr. Incredible dodges it so that the robot tears out its own power core instead. Mr. Incredible emerges victorious as the robot drops dead, motionless. Syndrome and Mirage observe this and use the fight to make improvements, leading to the Omnidroid v.9.

The Incredibles (video game)[]

The Omnidroid v.8 appears in the video game of the same name as a boss in the eighth level "Volcanic Eruption". Unlike the Omnidroid seen in the film, it has a green "visor" instead of blue and looks slightly dirtier. It also features attacks and abilities that do not appear in the film. It can fire lasers from its visors and spin its whole body like a bladed spinning top.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Strength: The Omnidroid was prominently indomitable in its tremendous strength. Its strength allowed it to grapple cliffs, hurl boulders, and nearly push Mr. Incredible into a pit of lava.
  • Intelligence/calculative powers: The Omnidroid was also preternaturally intelligent, even for a computer. Its own computer was an actual Artificial Intelligence that enabled it to effortlessly and immediately overcome any obstacle or opponent it was confronted with. As a result, it never flees an opponent and is utterly relentless in combat. However, it was not foolproof, as Mr. Incredible was able to outwit its programming and use the Omnidroid's relentless nature against it, which eventually led to the Omnidroid destroying itself unintentionally.
  • Leap: The Omnidroid could leap far distances in a single bound. However, it lacked the ability to fly, which was possessed by the v.10 version.
  • Rolling: The Omnidroid had the ability to retract its head and limbs and form a ball so that it could move faster by rolling like an enormous bowling ball whenever necessary, as shown when chasing Mr. Incredible.
  • Durability: The Omnidroid was absolutely resistant to any physical attack from trees, lunge attacks and even lava. Some of its parts, however, were not invulnerable, as Mr. Incredible was physically capable of ripping off one of the Omnidroid's claws and both of the Omnidroid's sensors. It is also noticeably vulnerable to its own claws, being the only weapon capable of severely damaging its base and ripping out its power core. Mr. Incredible was also capable of moving the robot himself through punches and grabbing one of the robot's claws, but this would not cause serious physical damages to the robot.

Trivia[]

  • In the first film, Mirage mistakenly refers to this Omnidroid version as the "Omnidroid 9000" when she is briefing Mr. Incredible, even though it was really the eighth to be made. "08" is also visible on the robot's armor.
  • Overall, this version of the omnidroid (along with the final designs going forward) resembles a spider, a squid, and a starfish all in one.
  • During the briefing with Mirage before landing, Mr. Incredible deduces the robot has become so clever it wanted to pursue freedom; this is the fate that Omnidroid v.10 will follow.
  • Unlike in the movie, the Omnidroid's eye can glow Green in the second part of the boss fight in the game.
  • In the Gameboy Advance game, this Omnidroid can also do the ground pound attack where it bangs it sphere ball onto the ground causing it to shake and damage the player (unless they jump) much like what the Omnidroid v.10 does in the final battle in the film and the console game.
  • The scene of the Omnidroid rolling into a sphere and chasing after Mr. Incredible mimics the scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indiana Jones runs away from a large rolling boulder in a temple in South America.
